Hello, not sure if this has been asked before or if this is the right place to ask, but do you have recommendations for which ebook reader apps are best for downloading and organising fics? It will be best if I can sort and save fics into different categories, and is there is some form of cloud storage/sync available. I use an android device and download fics in epub format. Thank you for your help!
Hello! I probably won't be most helpful with this but for the few fanfics stored in my phone I use eBoox app. You can sort your epubs into shelves in it. But I rarely use it for reading fanfics haha

dottie-wan-kenobi: Calibre might have an android app, I use it with my computer and (i)phone and it’s very nice 🙏
gentil-minou: I use moonreader! You can add custom categories and ao3 fic summaries/tagging also show up in the systems summaries by default. There's also a lot of customization. It's been so long since I used the free version but i remember it being good too!
latitudeoctopus: I use readera which you can even put things in collections or seires add reviews and tag if you've read them etc.
the-sleepy-archivist: I use PocketBook (on iOS but it has an Android version). If you use Calibre + FanFicFare to back up fics on your computer or to Dropbox, it can access Calibre’s OPDS catalog too, so you can browse your whole library without having to download all of it to your phone at once first. PocketBook supports audiobooks too if you download podfics
mreisse: Another vote for calibre on PC and Moon+ Reader Pro on android phone. You can sync to an online directory and the calibre extensions (epub merge and I forget the fanfic downloader extension that makes anthologies AND auto updates your epubs when you trigger the update) where was I? Oh yes, Calibre for a full on library on your PC (with tagging, collections, virtual libraries and syncing, even a portable version you install on a USB) and Moon+ Reader Pro on Android /PS even without the Calibre managed library, I have 534 epubs downloaded from ao3 in my phone, arranged in folders. For the record only 30% is Wangxian fic ahahahahaha

both free-to-use e-readers I've used (MoonReader, which I had to give up because my new phone had a conflict, and since then ReadEra) have been so much better at basic tasks like "find the book in my library that I want to read" and "remember my place in the book(s) I'm currently reading" and "save all books I'm currently reading in an easy-access spot so I don't have to scroll to switch between them" than the Kindle app that it's honestly tragic

Do you keep fic downloaded on your phone to read? If so, what format/reader do you use?
I don't keep fic on my phone :/ however I did recently download a bunch of my old stuff, just wanted to have copies handy, on my actual laptop. I downloaded epubs but I've got calibre to convert the epubs into different formats depending on what I decide to do with them. I did recently check Reddit for like recommended e reader apps and if you didn't want to go the Kindle route (you can use the Kindle app on your phone if you're so inclined) moon+ and readera both came highly recommended

Hi! Here is Red Thicket and all the works I managed to save from the author (including the sun was in my eyes, the unfinished sequel and the second version)
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1EDuL7ji1xa01MUbLxq2AAmDe44eGDQj5?usp=sharing
Most are ".txt" files (because I didn't had a smartphone at the time and
that's the format that worked on my phone), other files are "epub" and "pdf". Some apps don't open ".txt" format so I suggest you try with the app ReadEra (android). That's a good one, reads almost every format. Please tell me if they don't work!
Hello!! Thank you Very much for replying to me and providing me a link!!
I can access all the files on my pc thankfully!!! On mobile it's a bit more tricky, I need to download ReadEra I think, though I almost exclusively read on my laptop, so it's not a big deal for me. I do need to download the epub files and then put them through a converter, but it's all worth it.
Thank you very much for providing the links for these fics!! They were my lifeline during the first few years of high school , and I think the original version of tswime forever changed me. I was very much missing the fics I've read from the author, and cursing myself for never getting around to reading Red Thicket. But now I can!! :3
Thank you so much, you're doing good archival work <3333

Muns, show your phone screens and compare it to how your muses would have theirs. Repost, don’t reblog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Much like me, I imagine Savash would like to have everything close by, the bottom row of apps (calls/messages/browser/Spotify) would be her most used one. Then, Goodreads, as she likes to write book reviews like I do (although much more often than me). Memrise would be around for her to practice foreign languages, Wikipedia for her to look up information, just like the browser, and ReadEra so she can read books on her phone when she’s out and about, and Spotify so she gets to listen to music while commuting. And her wallpaper would be a pretty photo from her home country, Spain, because why not.
I’m not entirely different, I have too many tabs open hence the two browsers I kinda prefer Mozilla over Chrome, idk why Chrome’s even there. I have a screen time record shortcut so I can keep track of when I sit on my phone too much and not do it (alas, I sometimes ignore it :')). I sometimes like to write on the go, and PCloud lets me access my stories quickly. I also like to take and then look at photos hence the camera app and the gallery app(plus Google phones have a great camera). All the other apps are there just so I can get to them easily.

Wait, I’m gonna put this here too just in case some other folks don’t know...
If you like to save your favorite fics from Ao3 to read on your phone, I highly recommend saving them as EPUB files, not PDFs. PDFs are huge for one thing, but also aren’t very “flexible” (at least not in most readers I’ve used).
Tumblr media
EPUB uses much less memory and allows you to change the font style and size as well as has several “modes” for reading like dark mode and sepia. For reading fic on my phone, I use ReadEra for Android, which is the cleanest yet most versatile reader app I’ve found. It’s also free! But if you feel like supporting the devs and getting a few extra bells ‘n’ whistles like saving quotes from your favorite fics or customizing covers, it’s not terribly expensive (currently I believe it’s $11 USD right now, but it also goes on sale sometimes; I got mine for ~$5).
ReadEra is also pretty nifty not just for allowing you to edit fonts and color, but it also saves your place and has the ability to sort by author, series, collection, and folder. It’s really simple to use and I read a lot more fanfic because of it.
The only downside is that it does make it harder for me and my scattered brain to remember to comment and kudos after reading a fic. So don’t be like me and drag your feet on that! Save the fic, then let the author know how much you loved it!

I downloaded ReadEra recently because I had downloaded some .epub files and I didn't have an app on my phone to read them.
Today I discovered that, not only does ReadEra have text-to-speech available, but in the settings you can choose from multiple voices and languages. It also highlights the sentence it is reading, so it's easy to follow along, and, if you miss something (or of the text-to-speech mispronounces something), it's easy to find the word being read. I'm getting through my difficult books so much faster now!
It also has a dark mode (weirdly, accessible only by gesture. You have to tap the upper left corner of the screen).

ADHD goblin here
i guess i can't even stick with one of these? - nowadays it's audiobooks, (and podcasts) but it's not good for everything. also, one reader! leave me alone with the dramatized shit. i can't understand any of that - i like ebooks. (readera is a pretty nice app for your phone that can be turned down to minimal light and dark theme and drop a yellow light filter on it - i can go to sleep without it waking me up) ( i don't know where my ebook reader is) - i rarely consume comics/graphic novels but boy when i do, i binge it - online texts and articles are mostly waiting for me in abandoned tabs - a lot of times closed after like a week, but sometimes i just go and read a ton of them (also does a wikipedia blackhole count here?) - i didn't read a printed book for a while :( i used to love them
Been thinking a lot about reading and getting information from text recently as someone with ADHD so I'm curious
I hate to say reblog to increase sample size but my following is pretty small and I'd like to get actual input on this, so if you wanna toss a reblog after you answer that'd be much appreciated <3

I'm pretty good at sleeping, but sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep because my brain starts going round and round with stressful job thoughts or something.
The thing that I am currently using as a solution to this is reading a book on the smartphone. Since it's on the phone you don't need to turn the lights on to read, you can have the book in dark mode so you aren't blasting your eyeballs with super bright light and when you fall asleep you can just let your phone fall out of your hand and don't need to worry about the book getting damaged or losing your place or anything.
I use an app called ReadEra. As far as I know it can handle ebook formats, though I mostly use it for pdfs. To read pdfs on it I lock the screen on sideways mode, that way I don't need to zoom.

I meant where do you keep your epubs? Is there a website where you can do backup your files and leave them there? or do you put them on the pendrive? and also, which app do you use to read epub? 🥺
Yes and yes.
You can keep backups of your EPUBs on any cloud sharing website (Google Drive/Dropbox/etc).
I also keep backups saved on 2 different USBs (pendrives) because I lost the first one for a bit, made a copy, then found it. Plus, the files can become corrupted, so if you're mega serious about not losing your stories, then you should have a backup of your backup.
Originally, I was using ReadEra. I'd download a story to my phone and read it from there. But my phone kept prompting me to delete old files and I had trouble finding work documents on my phone, so I decided to start saving my EPUBs onto my laptop. That's when I started using Calibre.
Calibre lets you edit the files, add/change tags, add cover art, and it's free.
It also lets you run a private server for your library. You can set up logins to keep people out of your stuff and access your library wherever you have internet. If you know anything about starting/running a server, then it's great.
Personally, I got a new WiFi router that is super secure and I can't figure out how to change the security settings, so I don't use the server anymore.
Now, I'm using Calibre Sync, which is an app that costs money, but it lets you search and sort your books. It gives you more of a proper e-library feel. All I had to do was export my Calibre library to the cloud and then connect the app to my account.
If you have the time/energy/money, there's an adapter you can buy that lets you access regular USBs by plugging them into your phone's charging port. They also make USBs that have all the different types of ends, so they can be plugged into different devices.
The cheapest option is to just keep your stories on Google Drive and sort everything into different folders.

Words: 1,738
Summary:
Murderbot finds itself as the newest passenger of Moya after falling through a wormhole. John stops by its room to see if it's okay. It's not. It's hard to be okay when your wrist has never healed from an injury that was just reopened by diving in front of a crashing spaceship to save a stranger.
John uses neopronouns.
I wasn't planning on writing a mini crossover or even fanfiction at all but that's what happened. Slight spoilers for season two of Farscape, no spoilers for The Murderbot Diaries because I'm making it up because Martha Wells is ableist and refuses to let Murderbot become physically disabled and also refuses to do any world building for this series for some unfathomable reason.
if you really really like this you can feel free to copy and paste the text into a document and then convert it to an epub or PDF using convertio.co or freeconvert.com. If you have an android phone, the app "ReadEra" is an awesome free ebook app that you can customize a lot of stuff on. I highly recommend it.

(Archived read-more link)
[Read-More was here]
Startled, Murderbot jerked its head towards the door, the sudden movement causing it to drop the roll of bandaging it had been trying to maneuver with only the use of one hand. The bandages bounced off its shoe and rolled to an awkward stop in the middle of the floor, the tail end still pinned under Murderbot's hand.
Neither Moya nor Pilot were willing to let it hack any of the DRDs, or Moya's sensors, so Murderbot only had its own eyes and ears to keep track of its environment. Try as it might, it hadn't been able to figure out how to access any of Moya's systems, even superficially.
The door to “its” room was stuck in the open position, and no matter how many strings of code it threw at it, it didn't budge. The technology that made up Moya was as alien to Murderbot as well...all of the other aliens on this ship.
Crichton, one of the two humans onboard the alien ship, was standing in the hallway, leaning against the rounded edge of the door with a casual ease that did not actually help Murderbot's startled anxiety back down.
“What?” It asked. It wasn't that it hadn't heard what X had said, it just couldn't think of any appropriate response.
Crichton gestured to the roll of cloth now on the floor next to Murderbot's feet, the tail end still clutched in its numb fingers. “That used to be my shirt. You got it from my room. Next time, ask me first.”
There wasn't really any response Murderbot could think of to that, so it didn't say anything, just sat there on the side of the bed, staring.
The human's gaze visibly fell to Murderbot's wrist, the one that Murderbot had been trying all in vain to bandage. The seam was bleeding again, and so were the surrounding tissues.
Neon purple and blue blood was beading up on the surface of its skin as the mechanical parts on the inside ground together in the wrong way. Its pain dampeners were working at the moment, but that could stop at any moment, and it had wanted to get the wound bandaged before it would be in too much pain to even think about it.
Unfortunately, even though it wasn't able to actually feel the pain, that didn't mean it wasn't there. Trying to do something as simple as hold the end of the bandage roll was almost impossible. Its fingers didn't want to move, and when they did, they were either sluggish and heavy, or twitching uncontrollably.
It had taken ten solid minutes to get the roll of bandages positioned so that it could try wrapping them around its wrist with its other hand, and all that had been ruined when the human startled it.
It sighed aloud, unable to keep it internal only.
“That doesn't look good. You need any help with that?” Crichton's voice had changed tones, gentler now than it had been before.
This time Murderbot managed to keep its sigh internal. Yes, it needed help bandaging its wrist. No, it did not want the help. Especially not from a human it didn't know.
But it couldn't afford to lose any more blood than it already had. Moya was alien technology. Even if she wanted to, she wouldn't be able to help it generate the nutrients it needed to keep itself functioning.
“You can help if you promise not to touch me.” Murderbot said, agonizingly aware that its pain dampeners could switch off again any second. “I just need to bandage this to stop the bleeding.” It wasn't going to apologize for taking the bandages.
It tried to lift its injured arm off the hard surface of the table for emphasis, but couldn't actually manage to make it do anything except tingle warningly with pins and needles.
Crichton was moving forward briskly, as though X'd been waiting for just such an invitation, stooping to scoop the roll of bandages off the floor with an ease that Murderbot envied.
“What do you need me to do?” Crichton asked, winding the bandages back around the roll.
Murderbot tried to lift its injured arm again experimentally, but got the same result. It felt like its whole arm below the elbow had been physically disconnected.
It ended up having to use its other arm to awkwardly drag its hand closer to the edge so that it would be able to wrap the bandages around its wrist without the table getting in the way. Its wrist hung limply in the grasp of gravity like something dead. That was not doing anything to make Murderbot feel any better about the situation. “I'll put the bandage on, you just...” It felt like its brain was being fried. Its performance reliability was taking a nosedive. “Hold it for me.”
If it didn't get this over with soon, it was probably going to crash. And crashing in front of a strange human was the last thing on its 'Things I want to do at any point in my life' list.
With another pair of hands to hold the roll of bandages and guide them while it worked with its free hand, the process didn't take long at all. When the bandages were on as tightly as Murderbot could get them, already soaking up the mixtures of blood, Crichton used the small utility knife Murderbot had also stolen from X room to cut off the end, letting Murderbot pull it away to tuck under the edges.
“My name's John, by the way, since we haven't been properly introduced.” Crichton said, once they were done with the first aid, “My pronouns are ze/xir/xirself. I'm a human, the only one you'll find in this part of the galaxy. I breathe in oxygen, and exhale carbon dioxide. I've got a friend in here--” ze tapped xir head-- “Named Harvey. His pronouns are he/him/his/himself. The rest of the details will come up when they're important. What about you?”
Murderbot stared, bewildered by almost all parts of the statement, and the best response it could come up with was, “I thought your name was Crichton.”
Crichton—John? Smiled. “It is, Crichton is my family name. Both work fine, but I do prefer being called John. So, what should I call you? No one really got a chance to ask earlier, what with the whole hostage situation. Thanks for saving our butts, by the way.”
Murderbot wanted to think fast, but the impending systems shut down prevented that. “My pronouns are it/its/itself. My name is private but this hurts too much to think of a good alias right now.”
Its pain dampeners were starting to fail, one section at a time. The suspense was almost worse than if they'd just failed all at once.
“Fair enough. Is there anything we can do to ease the pain? Any chemicals you could use as medicine? If we don't have it we might be able to synthesize it if you're lucky. Are you hungry? I can't say we've got good food, but it's at least...half way edible. We hope.”
This was one of the many shitty things about being a construct. No one had ever given enough shits about what they felt to care about making painkillers that would work on them. “No.”
“No there's no pain medicines we could scrounge up, or no you're not hungry?”
Murderbot no longer had enough energy to uphold an entire end of a conversation. “No.”
“Alright.” John didn't seem angry at its curt reply. “I can take a hint, I'll leave you be. Is there anything I can do to help before I go, though? I mean, you did get thrown through a wall for me.” Yes, that's why Murderbot's wrist was currently trying to murder it. Being thrown through a wall, it turns out, was not a good idea if you had an unhealed injury that liked to burst into pain whenever it wanted.
But the expression on John Crichton's face was so sincere it was doing weird things to Murderbot's insides, and not just because it was about to collapse.
Why did so many humans have to care about it? This one was a complete stranger. Yes, Murderbot had shoved xir out of the way of the crashing spaceship and taken the hit itself, but that didn't mean ze needed to look at it like that. They weren't friends just because Murderbot had saved xir life.
But there was one thing ze could help with.
Murderbot summoned up its remaining strength to ask, “How do I shut the door?”
John looked over at the doorway, then back at Murderbot, then stood and strode over, pressing xir hand against a raised spot on the wall that Murderbot hadn't noticed. “You just have to press this, or ask Pilot or Moya if it doesn't work. There's one on the outside too. The lock on this door's disconnected right now because it was designed to lock from the outside, but if you want to stick around, we can get it to lock from the inside.” Ze pressed xir hand against the button, and two sections of wall slide across to close the door. Ze pressed it again, and the sections slid back into the wall again. Ze turned to smile back at Murderbot. “See? Easy peasy lemon squeazy.”
It turned out Murderbot had enough energy to roll its eyes.
John stepped out into the corridor, and reached out to the wall on that side. The door began to shut again. Right before it was closed completely, John called, “Goodnight, sunshine.”
Murderbot had no idea how to respond to that, so instead of trying to think of one, it let gravity take control and fell back against the bed. It was soft and warm and a perfect contrast to the slightest chill in the air, like it was made specifically to be comfortable.
It was part of the alien ship. Part of Moya. Probably an organic part of Moya. That was creepy. Murderbot should probably be worried about that.
But it would rather shut itself down now, voluntarily, before it had an involuntary shutdown or its pain dampeners stopped working, so it sighed out another breath, and embraced the oblivion of a voluntary shutdown.

I will definitely be getting this (my boss at the museum uses the word content a lot).
Now I did used to own a Kindle Fire but that was 47 years ago so I assume it doth not work anymore (nor do I know where it is), but I assume there's an app for that. I know Calibre can open Kindles, but it'd be nicer to read on the phone. Wonder if ReadEra opens Kindles... (just checked and it does)
Tumblr media
On a trip to the local museum, Josey finds herself faced with an unexpected predicament. Despite paying for her ticket, most of the art has been hidden away and reserved for those using a subscription service called Content Cube. Frustrated, Josey subscribes, but this leads to a whole other series of disappointments, from excessive commercials to disastrous corporate sponsorships.
As Josey looks deeper into the Content Cube universe, she begins to unravel a horrifying realization about the nature of creativity itself in this modern world, culminating with an encounter between Josey and the physical manifestation of the gradual commodification of art and expression into the nebulous idea of content.
This encounter does not go well, but it leaves Josey a little more confident of her place in a world that’s endlessly hungry for “content.”
This important tale is 4,300 words of sexless searching for meaningful expression in a world that’s constantly devaluing the importance of art.

please enjoy new no sex tingler NOT POUNDED BY THE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION OF THE GRADUAL COMMODIFICATION OF ART AND EXPRESSION INTO THE NEBULOUS IDEA OF CONTENT out now on amazon or all buckaroo patreon tiers

so i have a. Healthy fear of downloading things onto my computer especially. things i am not. paying for.. i thought u might. enjoy or at least laugh at the gymnastics i just did to get the. orv epub on my computer while simultaneously making sure i am Not Getting A Virus
hmm im nervous about downloading a random epub on my computer i use for important stuff... hm -> i no longer have important stuff on my old chromebook, and it physically can't get viruses so i could read it on my chromebook!! yes i'll do that -> i charge my chromebook -> i download the epub -> "this file type is not supported" Ah. i see. i guess epubs are also a type of file this computer cannot run, along with exe files (hence the no virus thing). bummer -> search "can epubs contain viruses" bc now im considering downloading it on my good computer -> yes they can. hm. -> wait i have norton antivirus so it should be fine, right? right???? -> it will be fine. -> i check out the site im downloading from ok it actually looks reputable and not. Sketch ok this should be fine i haven't gotten any warnings from norton from being on this site it's FINE -> ok click download pls let this not screw me over pls let this not screw me over ple -> ok it downloaded time to scan the file TWICE -> it looks good ok to be safe let's scan my entire fucking computer okay looks good -> hmm i've never read an epub before but it should be like a pdf, right?? which means i can open it in firefox -> it opens up at least 200 tabs all empty and won't stop opening them -> HUH THATS WEIRD IS THAT. DID I JUST FUCK MYSELF OVER I DIDN'T LIKE THAT -> scan my computer AGAIN bc that was. sus -> search for "how to open epubs" bc that did NOT work at all -> ok i need an ereader thing on my computer. yay another. thing to download hhhhh -> i get an ereader thing for my computer -> mmmm my computer is glitching a bit Don't Like That but it could be just my computer being weird bc it does have. a history of being weird -> ok reboot computer everything is back to normal now -> time to scan my computer One More Time to be safe bc hhhhhh -> alright all good -> norton says the ereader is safe cool cool -> alright i set it up! -> I HAVE NOW IMPORTED ORV EPUB ON MY COMPUTER ->->-> ORV ACQUIREMENT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL YAYYY
in conclusion. i have a Very healthy fear of giving my computer deadly viruses but we have. escaped unscathed and with orv. hooray <3
Tumblr media
HELP............. well i commend your efforts and congratulate you on successfully making it out of all. that. lmao with orv intact. i personally prefer reading webnovels and ebooks and such on my phone rather than on a computer and if you feel the same way and happen to have an android i'd recommend the app readera it's good for viewing epubs and other files like pdfs and on epubs it lets you highlight things and add notes to your highlights like "gay" or "slay" and whatnot which i personally find highly elevates the reading experience. if you're fine with keeping it to your computer than that's cool too though and YAYYYYY i'm glad you're giving the novel a try :D
